 My goal at CTA

As a CrossFit trainer, my goal at CTA is to provide athletes with the best possible fitness program tailored towards their sport.  I will combine CrossFit concepts with tennis specific exercises needed for competition.  CrossFit combines working-out with competition in group settings, which increases intensity.  These workouts are timed and enable you to test your performance against yourself as well as your workout partners.  If you practice like you play, you should workout like you play - through competing!  I have found this brings out the best performance in people.

CrossTraining is the principal strength and conditioning program for many professional athletes worldwide.  This program is equally effective for kids, men and women.  It is designed for universal scalability making it the perfect application for any committed individual regardless of experience. I scale load and intensity; I don’t change programs.

The needs of Olympic athletes and our grandparents differ by degree not kind. Professional athletes, amateur athletes, and housewives have developed their best fitness from the same format.

“Hard-work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard”

My Story

Certain things in your life just come easy to you, whether it’s academics, music or the arts.  For me it was sports.  I played everything growing up including soccer, tennis, racquetball, basketball, baseball, and swimming.  In High School I narrowed it down to soccer and tennis and later went on to play college tennis.  I felt like I was working hard in the gym in high school, but knowing what I know now, I was doing workouts that were clearly not sports specific and had basically little significance to my performance on the court and field.  Even in college, we seemed to do the same type of training in the weight room that was geared toward the “beach body.”  My speed never increased and my agility stayed about the same.  If anything, my strength training was making me slower!  The very few workouts I did that were sports specific (squats, lunges etc…) I was doing with bad technique, which led to injury.  Finding CrossFit has opened my eyes to what it takes to work out correctly and make the most of your gym time.  The average CrossFit workout takes about 20-30 minutes.

Results

I competed in the 2010 US Open Southern Qualifying this past June in Atlanta, Georgia, my first tennis competition since college and starting CrossFit.  I was going up against college kids and top juniors in the country who were going to play high level Division I college tennis.  I can specifically remember getting to one shot that I never would have gotten to in college.  The ball had tipped the net off a groundstroke and I quickly sprinted up to the shot and put it away.  I was so amazed at my new found speed I smiled and walked back to the baseline.  In my next match I won a tough three-setter against a young 18-year old who clearly fizzled in the last set.  I basically won that match on fitness; he was much more talented than me, but he had nothing left the last set.  In my next match I played some guy from Israel who came out blazing, running me all over the court.  But, by the second set he couldn’t even walk anymore because of the heat and I easily won again because of my fitness; again he was more talented than me.

In college, I was the one who usually lost a third set because my ball tolerance went down because I was so tired and would get impatient.  I would have loved to have gone back and done these workouts in high school and college.  Who knows the tough matches I would have pulled out for my team.
